HIT ME UP!

Feeling like the new kid on the block, I guess I can tentatively throw myself onto the sandlot and see what happens.  (tentatively with a fair amount of passion)

I applied for Peace Corps last June and after legal issues I finally got my interview and nomination (Morocco September 2011) at the end of October.  Now here I am one year later, recently medically cleared and waiting not-so-patiently for a placement specialist to call me.... e-mail me...... poke me on fb.... or just say hey. Man, this is completely unfair and inpatient of me but I just graduated from school and would love to know if/where I'm going so I know how to plan for a job.   I feel it would be a poor representation of myself if I get a job right out of school and then peace out a few months into the job.

I've been hitting up job interviews and such, but I feel bad leading them on by talking about long term commitments to their firm or department. Solutions anyone?

  1. Are you aware that PC advises nominees to contact their recruiter if they do not hear from Placement by eight weeks prior to their nominated departure date? A nominee is then supposed to request the phone number of their Placement Specialist and call that person.
I was nominated in June, 2010 for departure on Jan/Feb/Mar, 2011. I didn't learn about the 8 week follow-up with the recruiter guideline until Mar, 2011. I followed-up at that time and then things began happening quickly. I received my Invitation in the first week of April (Staging this coming September).
    Good luck!

  2. Eternal thanks for the good info. there is hope for me yet and i am honestly nowhere close to my nominated departure date. I did however read that i have to send in an updated resume and proof of graduation. Will i need to do that once contacted?

ps. love ya blog. lots of good info. i will probably need to redo my dental as well. this is such a long process

  3. Hey Patrick- just wanted to comment as I'm a similarly medically-cleared, September-nominated volunteer. I am trying to go to sub-Saharan Africa to teach business. At the suggestion of another PC applicant blog, I emailed the placement desk and asked if I am still on track for September. They responded with a form email that a lot of us are getting, which says that due to federal budget cuts there aren't many spaces left for 2011, and that I should be prepared for a 2012 departure. So it's not good news, but at least it could give you some more info for job hunting. They give you the option of adjusting your departure date, so you could always tell them you want to defer until next year while you start a job. As an older (late 20s) applicant I can tell you that I'm really glad I worked after college instead of going straight into the Peace Corps, at least for being a business volunteer. I feel like I have a lot more applicable experience plus some more street smarts! Good luck with the process...
